Light at the end of the tunnel?
The latest news of the planning application for a new Community hall at Welney Playing Field is that revised plans were submitted
recently (published 14th March) following discussions on 22nd February 2011 between Welney Parish Council and
John Loveday, the Chairman of Welney Croft Cricket Club. No other interested
parties were invited to attend this meeting.
The Council eventually accepted suggestions from the Club Chairman to locate the
building as close to Hurn Drove as possible and to reverse the interior layout
so the changing rooms would be at the northern end of the building and the
meeting room to the south. This would preserve more of the field for sports and
recreation than previous plans and enable spectators inside the building to view
much more of the field (and any possible childrens play area).
The webmaster understands that one councillor, Cllr Dobson, wanted the earlier
plan to site the building further into the field to remain, to enable parking
between it and Hurn Drove. However, Council Chairman, Cllr Goodger, pointed out
that Sport England had objected to intrusion into the field and the Council need to
take that into account.
Mr Loveday's suggestions seem to address the main drawbacks of the previous
plans put forward by the Council, and if accepted by the planning authority
would enable the plan for a new Community Hall / Sports Pavilion
to proceed to the next stage - raising the necessary funds, estimated by some to
be in excess of £250,000.
