John Hunt the star, 110 not out and 5 wickets too!

Another hot Sunday, this time for a friendly fixture by the Norfolk coast at Snettisham.
After a delayed start due to the congested traffic, due to day trippers heading to Hunstanton, Welney won the toss and elected to bat first with a depleted team.

The old pairing of Neil Parkinson & Stephen Kent got Croft off to a solid start, a 61 partnership in 17 overs before Neil, fell caught behind the stumps off Lemoir.Stephen departed 2 overs later caught out at wide long-on by former Croft player Paul Ingram, after having a useful knock of 32 (including six fours). The following over, another dismissal, Umang Kaushik holing out to A.Herbert after two scoring shots (four & a six). Suddenly Croft was reduced to 80 for 3 wkts after 20 overs. Skipper John Gill then joined Jon Hunt at the crease for a partnership of 118 in 13 overs, dominated by Jon, scoring freely throughout until John was run out by J.Herbert for 12. Steve Saberton donned his pads for the last 3 balls and returned with 3 boundaries for a useful 12 not out.
Jon Hunt, yet again led the way for another match winning century, an unbeaten innings of 110 (including 5 massive 6’s). Close of innings 234 for 6 wkts..

Jon Hunt 110* - (5 x 6’s, 12 x 4’s)
Stephen Kent 32 - (6 x 4)
Neil Parkinson 18 - (1 x 4)
Steve Saberton 12 - (3 x 4’s)
John Gill 12 - (1 x 4)
Umang Kaushik 10 - (1 x 6, 1 x 4)

After the break for tea Croft had high hopes of defending their 200 plus score with two substitute fielders.
However the home teams opening pair of L. Jeavons and A .Herbert soon set about Crofts bowling attack and after only 10 overs had reached 71 & 153 off 20 overs and at one time 176 without loss - well ahead on the run rate and a possible 10 wicket defeat looked a strong possibility, both openers giving few chances. However in the 24th over, finally a breakthrough, occasional bowler Jon Hunt captured the wicket of Jeavons (102) bowled in his second over. Then the very next over Luke Wilson, in his second spell, also bowled the other opener Herbert (68). At 180 for 2 wickets, Snettisham still looked comfortable, needing only 55 off the remaining 14 overs.
The momentum then seemed to change with an inspired spell of medium pace bowling from Jon Hunt swung the match, capturing 5 wickets in 6 overs (3 bowled, lbw & caught – bowled) - finishing with 5 wkts for 23 runs.
In the remaining overs valuable contributions came from Steve Saberton, conceding only 4 runs in 4 overs, Umang’s maiden over and John Gill conceding only 6 runs from his second spell. This tight bowling ensured the home side fell well short on 219 for 8 wickets – Croft winning by 15 runs, all 10 wickets falling for just 39 runs

This friendly match was certainly entertaining with a remarkable recovery led by the club’s new found all-rounder Jon Hunt.

Steve Saberton (8 – 2 – 31 – 1)
Luke Wilson (8 – 1 - 46 – 2)
Rahul Jhawar (6 – 0 – 45 – 0}
Ben Clarke (3 – 0 – 30 – 0)
John Gill (3 – 0 – 7 – 0)

Jon Hunt (8 – 2 – 23 – 5)

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Neil Parkinson, Umang Kaushik, Rahul Jhawar, Stephen Kent, Steve Saberton, Ben Clarke, Luke Wilson, Ashley Inwood (DNA).

 RUNCTON – A DIFFERENT CLASS
The first sunny Sunday for a few weeks and completely free of rain – Croft won the toss and elected to bat first.

Only two league positions separated the teams at start of play but unbeaten table toppers North Runcton were in a different class on this showing.

The home opening bowlers W. Means (4 for 14) and C.Lee (6 overs, 4 maidens, 1 wkt for 5 runs) caused problems with their pace throughout the opening spell and with 5 wickets down after only 10 overs and 24 on the board it was always going to be an uphill struggle. The procession back to the pavilion started in the fifth over – Kaushik (3), Footman (0), Gill (0), Kaminski (0) & Hunt (6), all being clean bowled. For a while, the lower middle order bats restored a little stability to the innings – Parkinson (14), Kent, top scoring (17) and with Jhawar (14) batting steadily until bowled by Coote at the close of innings. Somehow Croft had managed to last 35 overs in scoring a disappointing total of 77.

Stephen Kent 17 - (1 x 4)
Neil Parkinson 14
Rahul Jhawar 14 – (2 x 4’s)

After the tea interval Croft had the best possible start in the second over with another brilliant slip catch by Jon Hunt, removing M.Green (0) off Matt Footmans bowling. In fact that was Crofts last moment of joy as opener B.Skipper (20*) and M.Skerrit (50*) then proceeded to easily knock off the required runs in just 15 overs for a convincing 9 wicket victory.

Umang Kaushik (6 –1 – 19 – 0)
Matt Footman (5 – 1 – 35 – 1)
David Goodwin (2 – 0 – 11 – 0)
Rahul Jhawar (2 – 0 – 9 – 0}

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Neil Parkinson, Umang Kaushik, Matt Footman, Paul Kaminski,

ALL ROUNDER FOOTMAN – CAREER BEST.

The early morning showers had stopped, then a downpour at match start time meant a 45 minute delay - Bircham won the toss and asked Croft to bat first.

The home sides opening bowlers S. & M. Rowe restricted Croft initially, only conceding 5 and 7 runs respectively from their opening spells. It wasn’t until the 13th over that a breakthrough was achieved with change bowler J.Dean bowling Neil Parkinson (9) with Croft on 35. Matt Footman remained disposing any loose balls to the boundary. He was joined at the wicket by Umang Kaushik and enjoyed a 124 run partnership in 22 overs for his half-century knock of 56 (70 minutes). Umang eventually departed, bowled by S.Fisher in the 35th over. Jon Hunt came to the wicket with only 5 overs remaining and wasted no time in getting the runs moving along, scoring an unbeaten 24. Matt scored two big sixes over the straight Long-on pavilion boundary, both off S.Fisher and carried his bat for all 40 overs for a personal club and career best 98 not out - just short of his maiden century. Jon & Matt added 45 valuable runs in the remaining 5 overs to finish on 204 for 2 wkts.

Matt Footman 98 n.o (2 x 6’s, 11 x 4’s)
Umang Kaushik 56 (8 x 4’s)
Jon Hunt 24 n.o (3 x 4’s)
Neil Parkinson 9

After the tea interval the visitors had the worst possible start J.King returning second ball - bowled by Umang Kaushik’s full toss. P.Brown (11) and N.King (38) quickly restored the home sides position in their run chase, taking the team total to 56 after only 10 overs. However, the very next over John Gill captured 2 wickets with his first two balls, removing Brown, caught by wicket-keeper Neil Parkinson and S.Rowe (0), who spooned up an easy chance for Umang at square leg.The fielders moved in for a missed hat-trick opportunity - nevertheless an important breakthrough. N.King remained and threatened with some hard hitting (2x 6’s & 4 x 4’s) and then fell to a great catch by Rahul Jhawar near the boundary at deep mid-wicket - off match winner Matt Footman.
Although middle order bats M.Rowe (19), Pillinger (11) and S.Fisher (28) proved difficult to dislodge after Kings dismissal, Croft was finally in the driving seat and it was only a matter of time. The last 3 wickets were taken by Jamie Russell, one in each of his 2.1 overs, all catches, to finish with 3 wickets for 2 runs. What a fantastic day for all-rounder Matt Footman who finished the match with 3 wickets for 16 runs (2 caught / bowled, one with the aid of his foot), also an outfield catch, and of course his unbeaten 98. Yet another memorable performance, helping Croft to a comfortable 69 run league win for maximum points.

Umang Kaushik (7 – 1 – 31 – 1)
Rahul Jhawar (8 – 0 – 43 – 0}
John Gill (4 – 1 – 11 - 2)
Matt Footman (4 – 0 – 16 – 3)
Wayne Kercher (4 – 1 – 23 – 1)
Jamie Russell (2.1 – 1 – 2 – 3)

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Neil Parkinson, Umang Kaushik, Matt Footman, Paul Kaminski, Wayne Kercher, Rahul Jhawar, Jamie Russell, Dennis Birch, (Steve Saberton absent).

BLOWS CUP – ANOTHER TON FOR HUNT Sunday 05 July

The early morning showers stopped and the sun eventually shone on this seasons Blows Invitation Cup match against Leverington.

After the early shock of losing in form opener Paul Kaminski in the first over, it was left to Neil Parkinson & Umang Kaushik to get their heads down batting steadily taking the score to 36 until the 12th over – first change bowler J. Wilson then bowling Umang for 22. Next over Neil also departed bowled by Buttress in his first over - score 38 for 3 wkts. In the meantime Jon Hunt had entered the affray, had a quick look, one dot ball, then 4, 6,& 1 and he was off the mark. Jon then proceeded to have 3 match winning partnerships – 49 with Darren Ebbs, 86 with Ashley Inwood and 50 with Jon Dale. The fielders had been scattered around the perimeter of the field of play as the boundaries flowed from his bat, passing the century mark with just 37 scoring shots. His innings had lasted 25 overs before he finally departed in the 37th over - bowled by Forder when on 138. Another memorable innings for the club and spectators, falling just 17 runs short of the club record 155*. His innings had included 7 x sixes & 18 x fours.

Jon Hunt 138 - (7 x 6’s, 18 x 4’s)
Umang Kaushik 22 - (4 x 4’s)
Ashley Inwood 22 - (3 x 4’s)
Neil Parkinson 14
Jon Dale 12 - (2 x 4’s)

After the tea interval the visitors got off to a poor start losing both openers Bailey & Alecock to Matt Footman - bowled and caught respectively. It was left to ‘guest’ Steve Kent to show the way against his collegues scoring a half – century (51) including seven boundaries. Only other batsman to record double figures being J.Wilson (18)
Leverington completed their innings on 112 in the 30th over. Another good all round fielding performance taking 5 catches – one of special note and a worthy entry for catch of the season – a backwards diving one handed catch in the slips by Jon Hunt. Wickets were shared - two being taken by Umang Kaushik (2 for 18), Matt Footman (2 for 9), Jon Dale (2 for 30) & Paul Kaminski (2 for 19). Croft ran out convincing winners - retaining the club cup by 121 runs.

Jon recorded his second ton for the club - also hitting a century in last seasons Blows Cup against CAMRA.
This year he completed if possible an even better all round performance - 138 runs, a remarkable catch and even taking the last Leverington wicket (1 for 6)?

Umang Kaushik (7 – 0 – 18 – 2)
Matt Footman (4 – 0 – 19 – 0)
Jon Dale (8 – 0 – 30 – 2)
Paul Kaminski (4 – 0 – 26 – 0)
John Gill (4.4 – 1 – 19 - 3)
Jon Hunt (1.2 – 0 – 6 – 1)

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Neil Parkinson, Umang Kaushik, Ashley Inwood, Oliver Revett, Matt Footman, Paul Kaminski, Darren Ebbs, Jon Dale, (Stephen Kent).

MUNDFORD DOUBLE OVER CROFT
The early morning overcast conditions with showers cleared just in time to start this league fixture against Mundford.
The opposition won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers scored 9 in the first over and the early batsmen kept up a high run rate - 57 off 10 overs, 100 off 19 overs. However wickets were falling and fell in the 2nd, 4th, 12th 18th & 19th overs leaving the visitors 100 for 5wkts.Steve Saberton removed bats 2 & 3 in his first 2 overs both caught by John Gill and John himself removed Croucamp (28) LBW & bowling Thomson (23). It was left to left arm stock bowler Wayne Kercher to remove opener McIsaac (33) LBW and bowled Yates in his first two overs, finishing with 2 wkts for 9 off his 5 over spell. Sean Goodger made a welcome return after 5 seasons conceding 14 from 4 overs. John Gill held 3 catches including a caught/bowled for the last wicket. Best bowling figures this week – Steve Saberton (4 for 33) and John Gill (3 for 19). After the early batting display Croft recovered well to restrict Mundford to only 145, what seemingly looked like a reasonable target?
.
Umang Kaushik (8 – 1 – 37 – 1)
Steve Saberton (8 - 1 – 33 – 4 )
Matt Footman (4 – 0 – 19 – 0)
John Gill (4.4 – 1 – 19 - 3)
Wayne Kercher (5 - 2 – 9 – 2)
Sean Goodger (4 – 0 – 14 – 0)

After the break Croft was never able to come to terms with the visitors bowling attack, scoring a mere 11 runs from the first 11 overs? Even after the opening bowlers Thomson & Yates were rested, the home batsmen fared little better. Ovel (3 for 18) – Steve Kent trapped LBW, Umang Kaushik caught at deep gully and Ashley Inwood caught. S. Wright (2 for 11) – had Jon Hunt (9) caught near the boundary at long-ff (after hitting a huge six in the previous over) and caught / bowled John Gill. In fact it was a good all round bowling performance by the visitors all taking wickets for few runs. Opener Neil Parkinson (21) battled away for 27 overs to keep his end intact, eventually being bowled by 5th change bowler Burt. There was a brief flurry of boundaries by the tail enders – Steve Saberton (9), John Gill (6), Ashley Inwood (9) & Wayne Kercher (5) to take the final score to 76 for 3 batting bonus points. Otherwise Croft was well beaten by 69 runs -a little better than the 115 run defeat at the start of the season?

Neil Parkinson 21 - ( 1 x 4)
Jon Hunt 9 - (1 x 6)
Steve Saberton 9 - (2 x 4’s)
Ashley Inwood 9 - (2 x 4’s)

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Neil Parkinson, Stephen Kent, Steve Saberton, Wayne Kercher
Umang Kaushik, Ashley Inwood, Oliver Revett, Matt Footman, Sean Goodger.

KAMINSKI ROLLS BACK THE YEARS

Terrington opened the batting and after the early setback of losing opener Doacks, bowled by Steve Saberton in the 5th over, the home side settled in with Yousaf (48) and Manning (16) enjoying a 56 run partnership, taking the score to 71 off only 16 overs.
Both eventually fell to John Gill – Yousaf (48) caught in the outfield by Jon Dale and Manning LBW in the 20th over.
Number 4 bat J. Young (36) looked threatening until being caught out by Jon Hunt at long-on, off Steve Saberton.
Croft’s bowlers stuck to the task ahead with some fine performances – Jon Dale bowled particularly well conceding
only 16 runs off his allotted overs.
Best performances – John Gill (3 for 17), closely followed by Steve Saberton (3 for 21) & Umang Kaushik (2 for 41).
On the fielding front Matt Footman took a great diving catch in the covers and Jon Hunt holding another two skiers.
At the close of innings the home side had recorded 167 for 8 wkts.

Steve Saberton (8 - 1 – 21 – 3 )
Umang Kaushik (8 – 0 – 41 – 2)
David Goodwin (2 – 0 - 16 – 0)
Matt Footman (8 – 2 – 34 – 0)
Jon Dale (8 – 2 – 20 – 0)
John Gill (6 – 0 – 17 - 3)

After the tea interval Neil Parkinson and Paul Kaminiski did well to keep quickies A.Thompson and J.Young at bay, both causing problems and giving limited opportunities – score 18 off 8 overs.
However Neil and Paul weathered the storm for a seasons best 83 run opening parthership, until Neil was bowled by Hodgson in the 19th over.
Paul rolled back the years for his half century knock, until holing out to Felgate at mid-wicket, having taken his score to 56 (including 2 x sixes over deep mid-wicket).
On his departure Croft had reached 110 for 2 wkts (off 26 overs) needing 58 off the remaining 14 overs.
Umang Kaushik (39*) was then joined by Jon Hunt (32*), both batted determinedly, taking few chances, whilst hitting any loose ball to the boundary on this small ground.
Umang recorded 6 boundaries, Jon 5 including one six over straight long-on.
Terrington’s score was passed in the 36th over to record, in the end a comfortable 8 wicket league win.

Paul Kaminski 56 - (2 x 6’s, 7 x 4’s)
Umang Kaushik 39* - (6 x 4’s)
Hunt 32* - (1 x 6, 4 x 4’s)
Neil Parkinson 14

BOWLERS SET UP SECOND LEAGUE WIN

Croft won the toss and invited Grimston to bat first on a wet wicket and another cold Sunday afternoon.

The visitors never got to grips with the home bowling attack and were left struggling at 8 for 3 wkts after only 6 overs., and never really recovering.
Steve Saberton & Umang Kaushik causing big problems in the first 10 overs.
Umang Kaushik removed Tilbrook with his first delivery, caught behind the stumps by Parkinson, Saberton caught / bowled Howard and Harris followed bowled by Umang.
Fysh (13) and Gurbutt (12) managed to stay together for 4 overs, striking the ball well, until bowled by Gill and Saberton respectively - leaving the visitors on 57 for 5 wkts after only 13 overs.
David Goodwin (2 for 21) and Wayne Kercher (3 for 15) polished off the tail, Grimston adding only 15 runs to record a total of 72 after 29.1 overs.

Steve Saberton (6 - 2 – 14 – 2)
Umang Kaushik (5 – 1 – 15 – 2)
David Goodwin (9.1 – 1 – 21 – 2)
John Gill (4 – 1 - 7 - 1)
Wayne Kercher (5 – 0 – 15 – 3)

After the interval Neil Parkinson and Stephen Kent opened Croft’s innings.
Although Kent returned in the third over, comprehensively bowled by Gurbutt, he had already hit 9 runs from 5 deliveries.
Umang Kaushik also departed in the same over, similarly bowled. After this double blow it was left to Neil Parkinson (13*) and Jon Hunt (43* - including 7 boundaries) to patiently knock off the required runs.
Croft met their target in the 25th over for a comfortable 8 wicket victory and maximum league points.

Hunt 43* - (7 x 4’s)

 CROFT SUFFER IN THE SUN

On the hottest day of the season Croft’s bowlers were made to toil away in the sun.
After the early success of capturing opener Wilson’s wicket, bowled by Matt Footman in the 4th over,
Upton (89) and Jahy (75*) enjoyed a 134 run second wicket partnership in 34 overs.
Umang Kaushik bowled well in his marathon 18 overs – continually beating the bat with little reward.
The home side batted confidently throughout and on completing their allocated 50 overs posted 215 for the loss of only 3 wickets.
Matt Footman topped the bowling figures with 2 for 49 from his 11 overs.

Umang Kaushik (18 – 1 – 65– 0)
Matt Footman (11 – 1 – 49 – 2)
Jamie Russell (10 – 1 – 44 – 1)
Ben Clarke ( 7 – 1 – 24 – 0)
John Gill (4 – 0 – 20 – 0)

In reply Croft got off to a good solid start from openers Neil Parkinson and John Gill putting on 42 for the first wicket stand after16 overs.
First change bowler Steve Hayes then struck, taking 3 wickets in his third over, Parkinson (14), Gill (13) and Jon Hunt (0) – all caught in a min-collapse.
However Umang Kaushik (25) and Jamie Russell (35) then led a recovery for a 52 run fourth wicket stand, taking the score to 95 - Umang returning first, caught off Anish.
Whilst Jamie Russell remained with Matt Footman (15), both striking the ball well, there was a possibility of either chasing the runs down or holding out for a draw.
Hopes gradually faded as the wickets fell – the last wicket falling in the penultimate over with Ashley Inwood being bowled by Wilson, leaving Steve Revett 9*.
Croft fell well short of their target – losing by 60 runs.

Jamie Russell 35 - (5 x 4’s)
Umang Kaushik 25 - (5 x 4’s)

CROFT WELL BEATEN BY LEAGUE LEADERS

Croft played unbeaten table toppers North Runcton 1st XI on another bitterly cold and cloudy Sunday afternoon.
Great efforts were made to save the match with the loan of covering / sheeting to protect the wicket overnight and early morning. Welney won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first.
The visitors batted confidently throughout with J. Major just missing out on his century and M. Skipper being the main run getters and also having an 89 sixth wicket stand together. Eventually both batsmen fell to Wayne Kercher - Major finishing on (90 ) being bowled and Skipper (56) caught by John Gill. Opener J.Ring scored 43 in 18 overs. The visitors posted 238 for 9 wickets in their allotted 40 overs – a high order for Croft requiring a run rate of 6.
This week Wayne Kercher topped the figures with (4 for 51), closely followed by John Gill (3 for 45)

Steve Saberton (8 – 1 – 37 – 1)
Umang Kaushik (8 – 0 – 43 – 0)
John Gill (8 – 0 - 45 - 3)
Matt Footman (8 - 0 - 54 - 1)
Wayne Kercher (8 – 0 – 51 – 4)

After the interval Croft was hit with the loss of both openers Paul Kaminski (first ball) trapped lbw and Neil Parkinson bowled, by the same bowler Rawlings, leaving Welney 4 for 2 from 3 overs. With prospects already bleak, all hopes relied on a big innings from one of the top order bats. No.3 Umang Kaushik was going well until run out in the 10th over. Jon Hunt soon upped the run rate hitting 20 in his first four run scoring shots, hitting 31 (3 x 6’s) before ‘skying’ one to the bowler, again Rawlings. On the fall of the third wicket Steve Saberton joined Hunt to produce the Coft’s best partnership (43) of the day and kept the runs flowing until he was stumped going down the wicket to Major. Steve top scoring with 32 (1 x 6). With hopes rapidly fading only Matt Footman offered resistance with a positive knock of 16 (2 x 4’s) in his 10 over stay at the wicket. Again Croft’s tail failed to wag with the last 6 wickets falling for just 12 runs – returning just 106. Croft was outplayed and well beaten by 132 runs to the likely league champions.

Steve Saberton 32 - (3 x 4’s , 1 x 6)
Jon Hunt 31 - (2 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s)
Matt Footman 16 - (3 x 4’s , 1 x 6)

CROFT GO DOWN FIGHTING

The first home match of the season against neighbours Littleport in the Mid-Norfolk Sunday Cricket League.

Unfortunately Croft lost the important toss and invited to bat first in poor overcast conditions and fine drizzling rain, then suffered the loss of skipper John Gill in only the second over with no runs on the board. Umang Kaushik (19) then joined Neil Parkinson (12) for a mini recovery, putting on 29 for the second wicket. Umang departed first, bowled by the impressive Marsh (3 for 9 in 8 overs, including 5 maidens). No.5 Josh Jennings (11) made a gutsy debut, keeping the ball out and supporting Matt Footman in the biggest partnership of the innings - 38 runs. Best batting performance of the day came from Matt Footman whose knock of 39 included 1 six , before being unluckily run out. Croft's ‘tail’ failed to wag and posted 113 all out in the 38th over.

Matt Footman 39 - (3 x 4’s , 1 x 6)
Umang Kaushik 19 – (2 x 4’s , 1 x 6)
Neil Parkinson 12 - ( 1 x 4)
Josh Jennings 11 - (1 x 4)
Jon Hunt 9 - (1 x 4)

After tea with the sun shining Littleport may have thought the match was already won. However they didn’t account from a spirited fighting performance from the whole team - holding 7 catches. Ashley Inwood held one at backward point, then a great effort from John Gill diving for a caught / bowled and another “c-b” from Umang Kaushik, who was a persistent threat to the visitors, claiming 4 wickets for 21 runs. It was a good all round bowling / fielding performance with John Gill taking 3 for 15 and Saberton again being economical, conceding only 14 runs. After the fall of the 8th wicket the visitors were facing the unthinkable, a possible defeat, but eventually managed to edge home for a two wicket victory.
This was a low scoring match, another 20 runs would have made the outcome very interesting, the toss and weather both being major factors in Croft’s narrow defeat.

Steve Saberton (6 – 2 – 14 - 0)
David Goodwin (5 – 0 – 23 – 1)
Umang Kaushik (8 – 2 – 21 – 4)
Rahul (6 – 0 – 28 – 0)
John Gill (4.5 – 1 -15 - 3)
Matt Footman (3 - 0 - 10 - 0)

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Neil Parkinson, Matt Footman, David Goodwin, Stephen Kent, Ashley Inwood, Steve Saberton , Umang Kaushik, Rahul, Josh Jennings.

 FIRST WIN of the season

Welney visited Dersingham for the second league fixture of the season and batted first. Due to late arrivals Matt Footman partnered Neil Parkinson and unfortunately returned to the pavilion second ball. With two wickets down after 7 overs it was left to Umang Kaushik and Jon Hunt to settle in and lead the recovery. Giving few chances both rose to the challenge taking the score to 86, before Umang departed bowled by Brassett, having enjoyed a 67 run partnership with a knock of 34. Jon Hunt remained, looking good taking few chances and set for a possible century. Then in the 35th over, having taken the score to 183 returned to the pavilion. He had batted for 28 overs in his seasons best score of 77 (10 x fours and 1 six). After his dismissal it was left to Stephen Kent (26) to lead the way with valuable support from Paul Kaminski (14), John Gill (9) and David Goodwin (7”). Croft finished their allotted overs on 211 for the loss of 8 wickets.

John Hunt 77 (1 x 6’s, 10-x 4’s)
Umang Kaushik 34 (3 x 4’s)
Stephen Kent 26 n.o (2 x 4’s)
Paul Kaminski 14
John Gill 9 (1 x 4)

After the interval, Matt Footman gave Croft a tremendous start taking the first 3 wickets in his first 3 overs for only 4 runs. English and Havers staged a revival taking the score to 67 for 4 wickets – English then falling to Umang caught by Jon Hunt in the 16th over. The strong middle order bats Havers (67) and Cotton (25) upped the tempo taking the total to a threatening 161 for 5 wkts. Opening bowler David Goodwin claimed the prize scalp of Havers in his second spell – bowled. Cotten (25) and Coggin (15*) stubbornly remained still requiring a run rate of 6. Finally Cotten returned after being caught and bowled by John Gill. After the fall of 6th wicket in the 36th over the run rate had increased to 9, with only Coggin occasionally attacking the bowling. The home team finished 15 runs short. Croft's task would have been much easier had they not conceded a disappointing 44 extras – including 23 wides and 9 no balls? Nevertheless a deserved first league win of the season and a great team effort.

David Goodwin (8 – 0 – 39 – 1)
Matt Footman (8 - 3 - 35 - 3)
Wayne Kercher (8 – 0 – 41 – 0)
Umamg (8 – 3 – 32 – 1)
John Gill (8 – 0 – 42 - 2)

Team - John Gill (Capt.), John Hunt, Steve Revett, Neil Parkinson, Matt Footman, David Goodwin, Paul Kaminski, Stephen Kent, Wayne Kercher, Umang Kaushik & Dennis Birch.

Century maker Bradbury out hits Hunt.

This friendly fixture was played at Orton Park, Orton Longville, Peterborough in our first sunny Sunday afternoon of the season.
CAMRA got off to a solid start 45 in 9 overs from openers McClean and Geldart. Both departed in quick succession within 2 overs, Geldart caught behind by Parkinson off Goodwin, and McClean (25) caught by Dale going for a big hit off Footman. Unfortunately Jon Dale left the field shortly afterwards with a leg injury, unable to take any further part. Thereafter Nick Bradbury dominated proceedings batting throughout, completing an unbeaten century (100 n.o) (3 x 6’s, 12x 4’s). Bradbury & Wright (26) having a 4th wicket stand of 64. Croft’s fielding much improved this week, holding 5 catches – including one snapped up by John Gill at mid-off, removing Wright off Umagh. Steve Revett (2 for 39) claimed two middle wickets and Gill (3 for 28) finished off the tail.

Paul then returning to the pavilion, falling lbw to White and Umagh batted steadily throughout his innings of 29, until being run out. John Hunt entertained the spectators with another big hitting display in his innings of 46 (including 5 x 6’s- 2 enormous blows) in only 27 balls. Following John’s departure, caught in the outfield by White, to the great relief of home fielders. Steve Revett then took over the mantel scoring 36 (including 7 x 4’s) supported by Neil Parkinson (16). Croft ‘s innings closed at 163 for 8 wkts.

League Opener Ends in Defeat.

The season’s first league fixture in Division Two was played against Mundford, our opponents from last season in Division Three.

After winning the toss Croft decided to field and home openers McIsaac and White looked confident throughout the opening partnership of 81, ending in the 17th over - McIsaac (51) then being caught in the deep outfield by Saberton off Matt Footman. The runs continued to flow even though Sabertons first spell conceded only 7 runs - White eventually departing in the 29th over, falling lbw to John Gill, and top scoring with 57. At one time the home side looked set for a 200 plus score – but Crofts bowlers stuck to the task with only 36 runs being scored in the final 10 overs. Steve Saberton excelled again and was pick of the Croft’s bowlers, finishing with (1 for 21) from his allotted 8 overs. The home side’s innings closed on 182 for 5 wkts.

Steve Saberton (8 – 2 – 21 – 1)
David Goodwin (8 – 0 – 40 – 0)
John Gill (8 – 0 – 38 – 2)

Wayne Kercher (8 – 0 - 38 – 1)

Any hopes of chasing down and reaching the target gradually faded. Only Stephen Kent (15), John Hunt (17) & Matt Footman (16) recorded double figure scores, while David Goodwin (9 ) had a brief flurry in the final 2 overs, before being caught off Pears. Croft closed on only 67 in 30 overs – a heavy defeat of 115 runs.
