CROFT BATTING COLLAPSE Played at Isleham in sunny / blustery conditions.
Report by Tony Smart
Bowlers Jon Dale and Steve Saberton restricted Wicken to 25 after their 4 over opening
spells, conceding only 12 and 9 runs respectively, with Saberton removing opener Green
in his first over and only 1 on the board.
First change bowler Gareth Kent bowled his allocated 8 overs in one spell for 28 runs,
removing opener Murfitt (28).
R.St.John (67) and Murfitt had added 95 for the second wicket partnership and
M.St.John (29) joined his father to take the score to 140 before being dismissed by Steve
Saberton. R.St.John being caught in the outfield by Duncan Hobbs safe hands.
Bircham (40*) and Adams (19) added useful runs in the final overs, Jon Dale bowling Adams.
After a slow start, only reaching 50 in 15 overs, the home side eventually quickened the
tempo to add another 162 in the remaining 25 overs to close the innings on 212.
Jon Dale (2 for 35), Steve Saberton (2 for 39) Gareth Kent (1 for 28)
Percy Bulsara (0 for 26), John Loveday (0 for 42) Stephen Kent (1 for 29).
After tea Crofts response was very poor - Stephen Kent departing in the third over
caught behind, Neil Parkinson caught in the gully, Gareth Kent also caught behind
and new recruit Steve Sewell stumped, this leaving Welney on 33 for 5 with only
Duncan Hobbs ( 9 in 35 mins) offering any resistance,
Middle order bats Steve Saberton (27*) and Jon Dale (15) led a mini revival adding
30 for the sixth wicket.
However after Dales dismissal the tail failed to wag with four ducks being recorded
in the last two overs. all being bowled by Bircham and Bentick, the dismissed for only
70 in 22 overs.
Overall a disappointing result with the batsmen never coming to terms with the conditions
and some fine bowling from Wickens young bowlers.
Steve Saberton (27*) - four x 4's
Jon Dale (15) - two x 4's,
Duncan Hobbs ( 9 ) - one x 4.
Team - John Loveday (captain), Neil Parkinson, Stephen Kent, Gareth Kent, Duncan Hobbs,
Percy Bulsara, Ashley Inwood, Steve Sewell, Oliver Revett, Jon Dale, Steve Saberton.
