CROFT BEAT DIVISION CHAMPIONS Croft played Littleport, Champions of The Mid-Norfolk League Division 3 and previously with an unbeaten record for the season. Welney won the toss and invited Littleport to bat first. In extremely hot and sunny conditions the home side had a very early break through in the second over, Steve Saberton, dismissing Race, caught behind at 21, then four balls later, bowling No.3 bat Farnell. First change bowler John Loveday then caught and bowled (F) Logan, and in the following over Saberton struck again, bowling opener Shipp – score then 30 for 4 wkts after 12 overs. Middle order bats Leonard (32) and Connop (23) came to the visitors rescue adding 59 for the 5th wicket stand. Leonard falling to Jon Dale, trapped lbw and Connop soon followed. However ‘Port’ had recovered to 95 for 6 wkts. In fact 3 wickets fell on 95 – John Gill taking 3 wickets in 2 overs (final figures 3 for 12). The tail wagged with a final wicket partnership of 32, taking the visitors team total to 128. Earlier Steve Saberton had excelled bowling 6 maidens in his first 8 overs – final analysis (10 – 6 – 22 – 3). After the tea interval Paul Kaminiski and Stephen Kent got Croft off to a good start scoring 38 for the 1st wicket. Progress was further halted with the fall of two quick wickets, Dennis Birch (5) and Paul Kaminski (29) at 57 for 3 wkts. It was left to old campaigners John Gill (32 *) and Neil Parkinson (27) to see Croft closing in on Littleport’s total – 63 being added for the 4th wicket. Steve Saberton (7*) joined John to ensure victory by a 6 wicket margin. Victory enabled Croft to secure 3rd place behind Littleport in the first season back in league cricket.
